Mohs Micrographic Surgery
MOHS: Mohs Surgery treats skin cancer with precision while protecting healthy skin.
About Our Service
Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a state-of-the-art procedure for the precise removal of skin cancer, offering the highest cure rates while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. Initially developed in 1938 by Dr. Frederic Mohs, this technique has become the gold standard for treating basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and other types of skin cancers.
What Is Mohs Surgery?
Unlike traditional excision techniques, Mohs surgery allows for the immediate and complete microscopic examination of the tissue margins. The Mohs surgeon serves as both the surgeon and the pathologist, carefully removing and examining thin layers of cancerous skin tissue until only cancer-free tissue remains. This meticulous, layer-by-layer approach ensures that:
- The entire skin cancer is removed.
- Healthy tissue is preserved
- The highest possible cure rate is achieved
- The patient receives real-time results without having to wait days for pathology reports
You can learn more about how the procedure works in the video below, which explains each step in detail.
Fellowship-Trained Mohs Surgeons in Tallahassee, Jacksonville, and St. Augustine
At Dermatology Associates of Tallahassee and Dermatology Southeast, our Mohs surgeons are fellowship-trained experts in this highly specialized field. We are proud to have Dr. Armand Cognetta, a nationally recognized Mohs surgeon, as the Director of the Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship in partnership with the FSU College of Medicine.
